12 Years of data you say?

When it comes to starting a new accounting system, broadly speaking there's two types of people. Those that like a fresh start and those that want to take their data with them.

Our most popular conversion is the Convert 24 service that transfers across transactional data for the current year-to-date and the previous financial year. You can, however, take up the option to add extra years to your conversion. This has the benefit of being able to compare data for a particular period over many years.

Recently we had a customer push this to the extreme requesting 12 years of historical data! If that sounds like a lot that's because it is. It's easy to think "So what does it matter? 2 years or 20, the process is the same – right?" Well yes and no. We don't change the way the conversion works but there are complications.

For example, this was a conversion to Xero which was founded in 2006. In Xero it's not possible to set a Conversion Date (the date chosen to start entering day-to-day transactions) prior to January 2006 because Xero organisations don't expect any business to have transactional data prior to January 2006. Converting transactional data back to 2004 isn't therefore quite as easy as you might expect.

This doesn't even take into account API limits or other volume related problems moving 12 years of data.

Undeterred and enjoying a challenge, our dedicated Development Team put their minds to solving this task. And they did. We had to use our developmental testing environment to complete the conversion (meaning it won't work yet if you try this yourself) but it successfully completed with only one transaction failing to convert. That's not uncommon and after a two minute fix it was ready for the customer.

We think this is quite an achievement and we're wondering if this company might have the earliest start date in Xero. We'd love to find out.

Converting over lunch is now a reality

Our new, Self-Drive option has been available for a couple of months now so it seems appropriate to provide an update.

This new service allows our customers to process their own data conversions using our simple, online software. Accounting data for Sage and QuickBooks desktop being converted to Xero or QuickBooks Online is supported.

This was an amazing service and saved our business days.

In July 2016 73% of all Movemybooks conversions were Self-Drive and the average time taken to complete a conversion was 80 minutes. Yep, just an hour and twenty minutes to leave your old software behind and be up and running in the cloud. [According to our logs the quickest conversion took just 7 minutes!]

We're really pleased that our new Self-Drive service is working well and is so popular, but we know it can be even better and we're already working on improvements. If you've used it and have some feedback we'd love to hear it.

Self-drive conversions are here

Start your conversion before lunch and be working in the new data in the afternoon.

Today is a big day for Movemybooks. We have launched our self-drive conversion service. You can now convert your accounting data yourself, with our easy to use online software.

Previously, we asked you to send us a backup file and then you would wait a few days for us to convert it and get back to you. Now you can upload and convert the data at your desk, at a time to suit you. Setting up and initiating a conversion will typically take 10 minutes and it will usually complete in a couple of hours.

Start your conversion before lunch and be ready to work with the new account in the afternoon.

The first time you use the new software you'll need to register and then you just sign in again each time you are ready to go.

We've spent a long time making the software slick and easy to use - mostly you just need to click on the green buttons as you go. Here's a summary of the process:

  1. Setup the conversion (where you are converting from and to and for what dates)
  2. Extract the data from Sage or QuickBooks desktop (using our extractor app)
  3. Setup a new destination account (a new Xero organisation or QuickBooks company)
  4. Authorise the transfer from Movemybooks to the destination
  5. Go do something else and Movemybooks will email you when the conversion is done

We're sure that you enjoy now being in control of your own conversions. It will be a quicker and more convenient service for you. If you have any questions, please get in touch.

Xero - Meet the Add-ons event

We had a great time this week attending Xero's event in London. This gave us chance to talk to accountants about how Movemybooks can help them migrate their clients from Sage and QuickBooks over to Xero.

As ever, it was also good to mingle with other Xero Add-on partners over a glass or two. It's a friendly and helpful community, which is growing all the time.

I drew the short straw and had to present the 5-minute pitch, easily beating the countdown clock - no need for "the hook" this time!
